The Future of Product Traceability Starts with a Single Label

One label. One identity. Complete visibility from production to a connected world beyond.

Combining RFID, GS1 Digital Link, print-and-apply automation, product verification and connected data ecosystems to create complete supply chain visibility

A single serialised identity can be printed, encoded, applied, verified and tracked across the entire supply chain using a joined-up ecosystem of technologies and partners.

FAQs

Can you guarantee the RFID matches the print seal number?

Our state of the art process and fully automated equpiment at Watermill guarantees both 100% match and 100% RFID read.

What verification can we offer?

We can verify every single part of the label - both fixed and variable data. In addition, we can grade the barcode and check the packaging it's applied to.

Can you insert RFID tags into our existing labels?

Yes we can! Our press at Watermill can do this and verify the RFIDs match any existing serial numbers.

Can you track product equipped with your RFID labels?

BOWE IQ, part of the Connected Identity group, are market leaders in this field. Be it on site or part of the supply chain, BOWE IQ have the traceability solution.

How big is RFID really getting?

The global RFID market was valued at approximately €14.4 billion in 2024 and is projected to exceed €35 billion by 2032, with more than 50 billion tags produced in 2024 alone. This isn't an emerging technology anymore - it's rapidly becoming standard practice across retail, logistics and food.

What happens if we get it wrong?

Mislabelling and mispackaging errors are a significant contributor to UK food waste, and retailer codes of practice increasingly demand verified accuracy on high-risk lines. A single mismatch can mean product recall, retailer fines, or reputational damage that's far more costly than getting verification right at source.

Is our current setup future-proof for GS1 Sunrise 2027?

GS1's Sunrise 2027 initiative means 2D barcodes carrying richer product data will become the retail standard. We help customers build serialisation and identification structures now so the transition is straightforward rather than a scramble.

How automated can the RFID enablement process actually be?
Fully. Our latest press line includes an operator-free encoding and personalisation system with camera-based print verification across UHF and HF/NFC formats - removing manual error points entirely rather than just reducing them.

Do we have to choose between barcode and RFID?
No - and this is a common misconception. The two are complementary, not competing. Barcodes remain effective for manual, line-of-sight scanning; RFID enables bulk reading and automation without direct visibility. Most successful traceability programmes deploy both, applied where each earns its keep.

We tried RFID once and it didn't scale past a pilot - why would this be different?
This is one of the most common traceability failure points: pilots succeed but never make it to full rollout because cost, process change, or system coexistence weren't designed in from the start. On cost specifically, inlay prices have dropped dramatically over the last year or so, and our approach is always grounded in commercial reality - designing the system, including running costs, to fit the specific application. RFID is a broad field, with a wide range of inlay types and technology options available, and we're confident we can identify the right solution for your requirement rather than a one-size-fits-all pilot that was never built to scale.

Where does the £/return actually come from?
Beyond compliance, verified traceability reduces recall risk, cuts manual error-correction labour, and increasingly counts toward ESG/CSR reporting - a C-suite-level commercial decision for a growing number of manufacturers, not just an operational one.
